What you need to know about vests
Warm outerwear is already hidden, but the weather still has surprises. Freever will tell you how to protect yourself from cool winds and sudden rain during the transitional season. We will talk about a trendy item that will suit everyone's taste. It is not for nothing that fashion industry authorities add this item of clothing to their collections year after year.
THING THAT HAS TAKEN SO MANY FORM.
There is no exact date of the vest's appearance, but there are as many as 4 versions of the origin of the word.
- Vest comes from the word "Gilles" - the name of the innovative tailor who supposedly first made the garment.
- Vest from the word "gil" - that was the name of fairground jokers in France who wore a sleeveless jacket.
- From the name "Gilles" - a character in a comic theater who dressed in sloppy clothes with torn sleeves.
- From the word yelek ("elek") - a vest in Turkish. It is assumed that the Turkish sleeveless jacket was liked by Arab merchants and they spread it to the territory of modern Europe.
Be that as it may, mankind has used the vest for thousands of years. At different times, its prototypes were blouses, shirts, jackets, sheepskin coats, camisoles and other sleeveless garments. At some point, the Swedes of that time came up with the idea of creating separate outerwear of this style. This is how the vest appeared, which in the 18th century replaced the men's camisole, and in the middle of the 19th century became part of the women's wardrobe.
Over the course of two centuries, the appearance of clothing has undergone major changes. Couturiers have changed the cut, length, fasteners, shape of pockets, necklines, but one thing has always remained unchanged - the individuality of the vest.
A VEST IS A TRENDY ITEM THAT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLEMENTS YOUR WARDROBE.
Today, a vest is an independent and one of the most versatile elements of clothing. A bright and stylish top is a kind of alloy of quality, elegance, comfort and democratic image.
Famous brands offer a huge number of fashionable sleeveless jackets of various styles, colors and cuts. In this publication, we will focus on demi-season and insulated models. We were inspired to write the article by questions from customers:

WHERE TO WEAR A QUILTED VEST?
- For the city.
A sleeveless jacket is comfortable in everyday life: walking in parks, taking children to kindergarten, going shopping, to work, visiting shopping malls. This clothing is very popular with motorists (because it is light, warm and does not restrict movement) and children wear it with pleasure. - For country recreation.
In a cozy demi-season sleeveless jacket with a water-repellent coating it is convenient to travel and arrange country pleasure walks, and in light down vests - to have an active rest in winter, including: sledding, skating, cross-country skiing. - For sports.
A sports vest for running, cycling and other types of cardio training is an indispensable piece of equipment for outdoor sports activities, when it is already hot outside in a jacket, but still cold in a T-shirt. - For extreme sports - mountaineering and tourism.
For climbers and tourists, a vest is comfortable clothing as additional insulation: it effectively warms, protects from the wind, weighs almost nothing and takes up little space in luggage.
FEATURES OF QUILTED VESTS?
Designers are working hard on the design features of vests that enhance functionality and improve the aesthetic appearance of clothing. This is how new models of demi-season and insulated quilted sleeveless jackets appear. Here are just a few of them.
- Short vest - for warmer weather.
- Long quilted vest - for windy and cold season.
- Vest with asymmetrical cut - exclusive and extraordinary look.
- A quilted sleeveless jacket with fur is a real find for late autumn and early winter.
- Short-sleeved vests - stylish look and additional warmth of the shoulder area.
- A vest with ThermoSystem lining - retains the body's own heat, thanks to the thermal reflection system.
- Oversized quilted vest - loose cut hides figure flaws, does not restrict movement, allows you to put on several layers of clothing.
- Vests with different lengths of the front and back - a shortened front does not interfere with lifting your legs, and an extended back retains heat better.
- Vest with a knitted collar, with a stand-up collar, with a high collar and a non-removable hood, with a high or short insulated collar without a hood, with a sewn-in hood, with a hood fastened with buttons or zippers, a model with a sewn-in hood and additional collar insulation.
It is impossible to get steamed, wet or cold in a quality vest. The top of urban clothing can be very different: nylon, reinforced membrane polyester or other. The main thing is that the outer fabric protects from wind and wet precipitation, and the fluff does not come out.
But vests for sports and active recreation have more stringent requirements. The outer material should not only hold down well, block wind and moisture, but also be lightweight, tear-resistant, abrasion-resistant and breathable. And this can only be provided by a membrane, softshell, material with membrane properties or membrane coating.
As thermal insulation, mainly artificial insulation is used: bio-fluff, thinsulate, polyester fiber, synthetic winterizer. The thermal insulation properties of clothing and the season of use depend on its thickness. The vest can be washed in a washing machine. The insulation does not bunch up, dries quickly, and easily restores its shape.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE LENGTH OF A POUCH VEST?
Designers offer several models of puffer vests. There are three most common styles by length:
- short
- waist-length vest,
- hip-length vest or knee-length vest.
A cropped vest makes you look even shorter, so it is not recommended for short girls. It should also not be worn by those with large breasts - a sleeveless jacket that is too short disrupts the proportions of the body.
A waist-length model draws attention to the legs, so such vests are contraindicated for those with not very long legs.
A waistcoat to the hip line or to the knee is suitable for girls and women of short stature, provided that they are wearing any type of trousers, but not a skirt.
WHAT TO WEAR WITH A QUILTED SLEEVELESS JACKET?
Vests made of technological materials are used in two ways:
- As a warming layer under the main windproof clothing - this is what climbers and tourists wear during mountain hikes.
- As an independent top for every day in the cool season, following the principle of multi-layering (thermal underwear + intermediate layer + sleeveless jacket).
In the latter case, a quilted sleeveless jacket is democratic enough and almost universal so that you don't have to rack your brains over what to combine it with. The main thing is not to try to squeeze the vest into a classic, dramatic or any other non-casual look, because it will look unsightly.
The variety of styles allows you to combine the vest with any of the things you already have:
- with a tracksuit;
- with leggings and a sweatshirt;
- with sweatpants and a hoodie;
- with jeans and a sweater or blazer;
- with trousers (any casual option) and a shirt.
As footwear:
- any boots (suede, fabric, genuine leather),
- high platform boots,
- sneakers, trainers,
Accessories: scarf (the most important accessory), neck scarf, gloves. Headwear: caps, knitted and crocheted hats, headbands. Bags: small shoulder bags (not clutches), leather and textile backpacks.
And most importantly, the vest must fit well. It's quite easy to check: try on a puffy sleeveless jacket and fully button it up. If the vest is bulging or restricts movement, change the size or model. Fortunately, there have never been any problems with this in the freever.ua online store.
The popular Ukrainian brand of clothing for sports and active leisure, the Freever company, offers a large selection of vests, which are indispensable in the season of changeable weather. You can choose a model to your taste here.
