How to find out the size of men's jeans?
Jeans are so comfortable, practical and versatile that it is hard to imagine how we managed without them before. The official date of their birth is considered to be May 20, 1873. It was on this day that the Strauss Co company received a license for the sole right to produce denim trousers. Later they became known as Levi’s, and the signature features of the product – dark blue cotton fabric, rivets, stitches and lines, as well as a guarantee of quality – became the standard.
For experienced shoppers, there is no question: "Where to buy branded jeans?" The answer is obvious - of course, in an online store! Fortunately, there are plenty of them today, from official branded ones to online outlets. Their advantages are obvious:
- zero risk of buying a copy;
- original quality;
- large selection;
- guarantee;
- price.
There is only one problem - it is impossible to try on jeans in the online store. And many inexperienced buyers find this point annoying. The probability of wasting time, money and getting clothes of the wrong size is present. And even the fact that the item can be returned, with a refund of money and shipping costs - is of little consolation. But it turns out that it is quite possible to do without trying on and to buy guaranteed jeans that will fit you like a glove. To do this, you do not need to "play roulette" - exchange one size for another to find your option. It is enough to understand two parameters: length and volume, and then, using size charts, correctly determine your jeans size. And it is much easier to do this than it may seem at first glance. And now about all this in more detail.
- How to determine the size of jeans?
- Determine the size of jeans by measurements.
- Determine the size of jeans by American height charts.
- Waist and hip circumference table.
- How to measure length (L) and waist (W) correctly?
HOW TO DETERMINE YOUR JEANS SIZE?
The size of any pair of jeans is described by two main parameters - the waist circumference and the length of the product along the inner seam, designated respectively as "W" (from the English word Waist) and "L" (from the word Long). Considering that jeans are a purely American invention, their sizes are traditionally indicated in inches. On the product label, the designations look like this - W32 L30 or 38W 34L.
You can determine the size of jeans in two ways:
- by measurements,
- by American height charts.
1. DETERMINING THE SIZE OF JEANS BY MEASUREMENTS
To determine your jeans size, measure your waist and inseam. You can do this in two ways: take measurements on yourself or on jeans you already have in your wardrobe that fit you perfectly. Divide the resulting values in centimeters by 2.54 (2.54 cm is 1 inch). Round the result to the nearest whole number.
For example:
- Your waist measurement is 90 cm. Divide 90 / 2.54 to get 35.433. Round the value to 36. So, your W = 36".
- Your inseam measurement is 96 cm. Divide 96 / 2.54 to get 37.799. Round the value to 38. So, your L is 38".
You received your jeans size in the American standard: waist - W36 length - L38 or W36 L38.
2. DETERMINING THE SIZE OF JEANS BY AMERICAN SIZING CHARTS
You don't have to bother with a flexible tailor's tape measure, measuring your waist and inseam, but estimate your jeans size based on your height. Empirically, the patterns have long been established, which are presented in the tables below.
Table #1. Determine the length of L.
Explanation:
So, if your height is between 161 cm and 170 cm, then with a high probability the length along the inner seam is within 72-76 cm, which corresponds to L30.
Table No. 2. We determine the volume of the belt W.
Explanation:
So, if your Ukrainian size is 44, then in the American standard it is 28, which corresponds to a waist circumference of 70-72 cm and a hip circumference of 89-91 cm.
If you don't have the table at hand at the right moment, you can determine the size W based on your usual Ukrainian clothing size. Just subtract the constant number 16 from it. Let's say you wear size 52. Subtract: 52 - 16 = 36. Your result is W36.
So, from table #1 you get size L, and from table #2 you get size W.
WAIST AND HIP CHART
If you buy in a European online store, then instead of the American size standard, you will find the European one. It does not have the numerical parameters W36 L38, but has letter parameters - S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL. They do not provide information about the length of the trousers (you will need to check this in the description), but they characterize the fit of the jeans at the waist and on the hips well.
Above we said that one of the ways to determine the size of jeans (by the way, it is the most accurate) is to measure in person. But we did not show how to do it correctly. We correct this omission.
HOW TO CORRECTLY MEASURE LENGTH (L) AND WAIST (W)?
You can do this in two ways: take measurements on yourself or on jeans you already have in your wardrobe.
How to take measurements on yourself?
- Take measurements on a naked body.
- Decide what kind of trousers you would like: low, medium or high. Accordingly, take measurements - below the waistline, at the waistline or slightly above.
- When measuring your waist around the waistband, keep the tape measure loose but not sagging. If the measurement is between two whole numbers, round up to the smallest whole number (if stretch denim) or the largest whole number (if cotton).
- Measure the length of the inseam from the crotch to the floor.
How do I take measurements from another pair of jeans?
- Choose a pair of jeans from your wardrobe that fit you perfectly.
- Fasten them and lay them out on a flat surface, smoothing out any creases.
- Measure the waist from edge to edge and multiply the measurement by 2.
- Measure the length of the inseam from the wedge of the crotch seam to the hem of the leg.
