How to determine your T-shirt size?
Everyone loves T-shirts. They are one of the most versatile items of men's and women's clothing. They are light, soft, easy to care for and surprisingly comfortable. Another reason for the popularity of T-shirts is their versatility: the items are great for home, work, the beach, outdoor activities, sports, and walks. The T-shirt can be worn separately or as part of multi-layered looks, as an additional layer of warmth and at the same time as one of the components of a stylish image. They can be plain, colored, multi-colored, with a graphic print, a funny inscription or picture; look casual or very elegant.
In general, a T-shirt is a cool thing, and you can't go anywhere without it! There is only one problem - how to determine your T-shirt size. When buying offline, you can try on a dozen models and not always find yours. And in the case of an online purchase, choosing a suitable T-shirt is much more difficult. After all, it is impossible to try it on, so you rely only on the size that you have always worn. Time passes, you wait for your order, and when you have it, it turns out that it is not your size or it is your size, but the item fits awkwardly. Shopping like this is nothing but disappointment. To avoid this happening again, learn to accurately determine your T-shirt size the first time. We will tell you how to do this now.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT T-SHIRT SIZE?
It would be nice if the sizes of T-shirts from all manufacturers were standard. Unfortunately, this is not the case. On the product tags you can often find:
- SU/RU — the size of the former CIS countries.
- US/USA — American size.
- EU/EUR — European.
- UK — British.
- CH — Chinese.
Because of the huge discrepancy, it is difficult to determine what size T-shirt you should wear. That is why there are tables of correspondence between the sizes of men's, women's and children's clothing: USA, Europe, Ukraine, Turkey, China. But even they do not guarantee that you will choose the perfect T-shirt size. Why? Because manufacturers work according to their own patterns and standards, and accordingly the fit of the clothes is different. The situation is aggravated by individual characteristics that may exist in both individual countries and different brands. Therefore, always focus only on the size chart (or size table) of the manufacturer from whom you are going to buy the item. And for this you need to know some of your anthropometric data.
HOW TO FIND OUT YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE BY HEIGHT, VOLUME AND OTHER PARAMETERS?
Today, almost half of all people buy clothes online, using size charts from online stores. The size chart is a useful tool that allows you to determine the size of a T-shirt based on your chest size, height, sleeve length, and waist size.
How to find out the size of a T-shirt based on your body parameters?
The sequence of actions is simple:
- Measure your parameters (there are several of them, and we will talk about them below).
- Compare the measurements with the parameters in the brand's size chart. If your measurements do not correspond to the table, round them up to the nearest next one.
- Determine what T-shirt size (XS, S, M, L, XL, etc.) your measurements correspond to.
How to measure yourself?
There are two options: take your own measurements or measure a T-shirt that fits you perfectly, after laying it on a flat surface.
What parameters should be measured?
There are basic and additional ones. The latter are: neck width, hem width, stitch width and others, depending on the T-shirt model. We will consider only the basic parameters using the example of size chart 1.
SIZE TABLE 1.
![]() | Height by chest or total length of the product (parameter A from table 1) - measure from the front from the upper edge of the shoulder seam to the lower edge of the T-shirt. |
![]() | Chest width or half-chest girth (A1) - measure the distance between the lower parts of the vertical seam (between the armpits) across the widest part of the chest. |
![]() | The width of the bottom of the product or the half-girth of the hips (A2, not to be confused with the width of the waist - the narrowest part of a fitted T-shirt, which is located a few centimeters above the hip line). The measurement of the bottom of the product is taken at the widest part of the hips from the far left point to the far right point. |
![]() | Shoulder width (B) is the measurement between the two vertical seams where the sleeves begin. If the shirt does not have vertical seams (e.g. a raglan shirt), bend the sleeves vertically from the armpits. This will create false vertical seams. |
![]() | Armhole width (C) - measure from the top point of the vertical seam to the bottom point across the front of the shoulder. |
![]() | Sleeve length (D) - measure from the top of the vertical seam along the length of the sleeve to its edge. |
![]() | Length of the bottom of the sleeve (D1) - measure from the bottom point of the vertical seam (under the arm) along the length of the sleeve to its edge. |
MAIN PARAMETERS OF A T-SHIRT
MEN'S T-SHIRT SIZE - SELECTION FEATURES
When determining the size of a men's T-shirt, it is necessary to take into account the peculiarity of the physique. The latter is of three types:
- Asthenic type - typical for men who are tall and thin.
- Athletic type - typical for men with good bone and muscle tissue development, proportional build, broad shoulders, and a convex chest.
- Pyknic type - is typical for men of average height, with a dense figure. They are prone to obesity, and their stomach is a kind of center of the physique (compared to the shoulder girdle of athletes).
That is why size charts necessarily take into account such indicators as waist and hip circumference. They are very important for men of a pyknic build, while for asthenics and athletics, the priority is the width of the shoulders and the total length of the product.
WOMEN'S T-SHIRT SIZE - SELECTION FEATURES
Women's and men's T-shirts differ in their cut features, because different patterns are used for their sewing. It's all about physiological differences. Women have narrower shoulders and waist, larger chest and hips. Accordingly, the women's T-shirt is slightly fitted, the sleeve is shorter, the neckline is deeper, the front and back are of different shapes and there are always side seams. Therefore, the choice of the size of a women's T-shirt mainly depends on two indicators: the half-girth of the chest and the width of the waist.
In this case, determining the height is also of great importance. For example, if the product indicates 44/168, it means that it will fit a woman with a chest size of 88 +/- 2 cm and a height of 168 +/- 3 cm.
It is important for plump women to choose a T-shirt taking into account the fullness of their figure. Fullness is determined by the difference between the hips (H) and the chest (CB), which will be different for each of the five figure types:
- "0" group - hourglass, the difference indicator (OG - OB) should be minus -2 cm;
- "1" group - rectangle, -2 cm;
- "2" group - pear, -6 cm;
- "3" group - triangle, -12 cm;
- "4" group - oval or apple, this is -16 cm.
Conclusion
So, to determine the size of a T-shirt for yourself, you can use two methods:
- T-shirt size chart for women and men in different standards.
- Measure your own anthropometric parameters (the most important of these will be the largest chest circumference and the total length of the product) and compare them with the size chart data of the brand whose T-shirt you are going to buy.
In the first case, you get an approximate result, and in the second - an exact one. In order not to bother with measuring your own body parameters, you can do it easier. Take the one of your existing T-shirts that fits you perfectly and take the measurements from it. Then go to the page FREEVER women's t-shirts or FREEVER men's t-shirts and determine your size according to the table. And then everything is simple: choose, buy, receive and wear with pleasure!
